Earth zodiac years end in 8 or 9 after the Chinese New Year boundary. Recent examples are 1998, 1999, 2008, 2009, 2018, 2019; Ox and Dragon and Goat and Dog carry fixed Earth. Earth introduces steadiness, practical support and continuity. It gives an animal's characteristic impulse something to build on; its difficult edge is remaining with a familiar approach after circumstances have changed.
A Earth year gives each animal a different emphasis. Compare two contrasting examples, then open any of the twelve types below for its own reading and exact occurrence years.
An Earth Rat reading centres on making ingenuity dependable: the clever shortcut becomes a repeatable arrangement rather than a one-off escape. Earth adds patience and a preference for practical preparation to the animal's alertness. This combination's difficult edge is excessive safeguarding, where the wish to protect a workable routine leaves too little room for the Rat's natural adaptability.
Earth echoes the Goat branch's fixed element, emphasising patient care, practical creativity and the comfort of a reliable setting. Resilience is expressed through small repeated acts rather than a single show of strength. Its challenge is becoming too attached to keeping things settled, so that concern for everyone else's ease postpones a change the Goat would also benefit from naming.
One element, several result coordinates
In a complete zodiac result, Earth may belong to the year's heavenly stem, the animal's fixed earthly-branch coordinate, the day master, or the separate Na Yin association. The label should always be read with that position.

A year-stem element always has a Yin or Yang form. These are the two stems that make Earth appear in a complete year name.

The stem element repeats for two consecutive years, then moves on. Across sixty years, Earth meets every animal exactly once.
