Choosing a Chinese zodiac animal gift
For a birthday gift, use the recipient’s birth-date animal. For a New Year gift, use the incoming year’s animal. Those two choices can point to different signs.
Birth-year or celebration-year motif?
A personalised card, bookmark or embroidered patch can carry the recipient’s animal. A New Year decoration usually shows the new year’s animal. Check January and early-February birthdays before choosing.
Twelve-year and sixty-year returns
The animal returns after twelve years. The same animal-and-element combination returns after sixty, making a complete-cycle birthday a different occasion from an ordinary own-sign year.
Make an original card
Print an animal outline on card, colour it and add its Chinese name. On the reverse, write the animal-year interval so a future reader can distinguish it from the Gregorian year.
