Central Asian twelve-year animal calendars
Twelve-year animal calendars also belong to Central Asian traditions. Kazakhstan’s heritage inventory identifies Kazakhtyn zhylnamasy, the Kazakh calendar of a twelve-year animal cycle.
Kazakh мүшел names in order
This is one documented Kazakh sequence, rather than a universal Central Asian list. The fifth name ұлу is retained as Ulu: published Kazakh accounts dispute its animal interpretation, while some school texts gloss it as snail. Do not silently replace it with the Chinese Dragon. The third name барыс refers to leopard.

The Kazakh history textbook places the traditional opening at Nauryz, 22 March, and counts the first мүшел at age 13, followed by 25, 37 and further twelve-year returns. A family record using this tradition needs its own date boundary.
A cycle beyond one region
The shared twelve-year form does not make every regional calendar identical. Local animal names, New Year customs and ways of counting age should be read in their own cultural setting.
Compare like with like
An animal-year name gives a position in a twelve-year sequence. A Chinese stem–branch name combines that branch with a Heavenly Stem and specifies one of sixty positions.
To compare a family record, keep its original regional name and date first. Then identify whether it uses an animal year, a full stem–branch name or an ordinary civil year.
